Positive Konnections

In our commitment to innovation, we have created a tech-enabled mental health intervention called Positive Konnections (PK). This was developed to support children, adolescents, and young people living with HIV. It aims to reduce the barriers of shame and stigma that hinder young people from accessing services and help them to see their own worth and value.

The intervention has 10 chapters of stories designed to help them discover their true identity, value, and self-worth. In each chapter, a short video clip is taken from a movie where a superhero is facing a situation accompanied by a short story that demonstrates how the situation the superhero is facing is similar to the experiences of having HIV. Showing young people that their experiences of fighting HIV are similar to those of superheroes helps them reframe negative self-perceptions and see themselves in a positive light, resulting in self-worth, love, and acceptance. Participants reflect on how the stories relate to their lives in the PK Work Book, with support from a counselor.
